"Bulldog" Bob Fescoe is the host of Fescoe in the Morning, heard weekdays 6a-9a on 610 Sports Radio. The KU grad has been a voice in the Kansas City sports scene for the better part of the last decade and brings his passion to the table with some bite every weekday morning.
Day two in pads is over for the Kansas City Chiefs and it appears things are heading in the right direction. On Monday afternoon, the offense took some steps forward on the practice field.
There is not a day that goes by that Jon Baldwin does not impress. Baldwin is taking full advantage of the absence of Dwayne Bowe. He is showing the skills to be a number one wide receiver. He and Matt Cassel looked in synch for most of the afternoon. At one point, Baldwin blew by Stanford routt and hauled in a long pass from Cassel, even though the ball was just a tad under thrown.
It was also a good day for the running backs. From Jamaal Charles, to Peyton Hillis, to Cyrus Gray to Shaun Draughn, the running backs really looked sharp. They ran the ball well, but the most impressive part of their play was the blocking. In one on one blocking drills, all the running backs stuck their nose in and took on blitzing linebackers and did a fine job. No one shyed away from contact.
One injury on the day, Junior Hemingway was carted off in the early portion of practice. They rookie wide receiver did not appear to be seriously injured, but I don’t have Dr. at the end of my name either. We will have to wait to see what Coach Crennel has to say tomorrow about his injury.
We did have one retirement. Offensive lineman Tony Ugho decided to call it quits. I guess he did not like the heat and the pain of waking up every day as a veteran in the NFL. Its tough to do. Good luck in retirement!
The Chiefs will hold a night practice tomorrow at Spratt Stadium here in St. Joe.
Day one of Chiefs training camp is in the books. The good news, is that no one got hurt and all the guys who were injured last season are back and practicing at full speed. Jamal Charles, Tony Moeaki and Eric Berry were all back in full force on Friday afternoon in St. Joe.
Charles split the first team carries with newly acquired running back Peyton Hillis while Moeaki was seen in a lot of 2 tight end sets with Kevin Boss. Berry patrolled center field like he never left and seemed like he would be ready to play if there was a game today.
The defense was clearly ahead of the offense on Friday, but that is to be expected in the early stages of camp. Cassel and Baldwin, who worked a lot in the off season together, misfired a few times. On other plays Cassel and the passing game looked sharp.
The only missing person of camp was Dwayne Bowe. He has still not reported to St. Joe and has allowed Jon Baldwin to take the number 1 job at wide receiver for now.
Coach Crennel was very upbeat and positive about his team. There are a lot of expectations on this version of the Chiefs. SI’s Jim Trotter was at camp and he said he picked the Chiefs to win the AFC West.
The first step to doing that was completed on Friday with the first practice in the books.
The Chiefs will have a walk thru and a practice again tomorrow.
All for now…..
