Bob Fescoe- The Clock Is Ticking

The clock is ticking on a number  of different things in the Kansas City sports scene.  First and foremost is the NFL season.  We are patiently waiting for the start of training camp and the preseason.  To say the offseason has been long, would be an understatement.  As the days roll on, fans are becoming more eager for the start of football.

The college season is less than a month and a half away and for the past few days on the show, we have been previewing all of the Big 12 teams.  It has me excited for the start of college football.  I think the Big 12 is going to be a tough conference and I think it will challenge everyone else as the toughest conference in the nation.  There are so many potentially good teams from OU, to OSU to Texas A and M and Missouri, all of those teams could win the league and end up playing for a National Title in January.

Of the three local schools, MU is clearly head and shoulders above the rest.  Gary Pinkel never lets his fans down when it comes to regular season success.  His teams are always ready to go and compete for titles in the Big 12.  Over at K-State, Bill Snyder is one of the greatest coaches to have ever walked the sidelines in all of college football.  He has not only rebuilt KSU once, but he is in the process of doing it a second time.  It takes a special person to coach and recruit to Manhattan, Kansas and Snyder seems to have the knack to sell players on Central Kansas.  His team is not picked to finish that high in the Big 12 this year but that is only because there are so many good teams in the league.  Over in Lawrence, this is a big year for Turner Gill.  He has no choice but to field a better team than last season.  Gill’s team was waxed in just about every game last year and they have to at least show they are competitive this year or it could be the end of a short lived Turner Gill era in Lawrence.  No one is giving KU a shot at all, in fact every preseason publication has them finishing last in the league.  They have a lot of work to do this year.

The other date people in KC are anticipating is July 31st.  At the time of this writing, the royals are 19 games under five hundred.  Fans will be looking to see who will be traded and what pieces the team will be able to bring back for the future.  I think fans are getting tired of the trade deadline in KC and eventually want to be adding to the team as opposed to selling off parts.

The next two weeks will be a lot of fun in KC.  A lot will be happening and the sports scene will be very active.  I know I am looking forward to the next fort night!
