Boy, that went fast. Two years ago, former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress arrived at a jail in upstate New York to serve his prison sentence for shooting himself in the leg in a night club. When the gates of the jail open today, Burress will be a free man. The release will probably be covered live by ESPN, but the release will also be a little low key. There was a time when Burress believed that when the gates opened, he would be picked up by an NFL team and whisked away to OTA’s. Since the NFL is in lock out mode that is not going to be the case today. Burress will eventually be signed by a team in the NFL and I am sure he will help someone out this season, but it will be a short learning curve for Burress. So where will he end up? NFL insiders think 11 or so teams will covet the mid 30’s wide receiver. The Eagles and St. Louis appear to have a big advantage over everyone else and I am sure the Jets will be involved as well. The question that I have, why isn’t every team going to be involved for the services of Burress? If I was running an NFL team, I would try my hardest to make sure I had a shot to sign Burress.
After two years in jail, Burress is going to be a model citizen. Most people leave the joint and never want to go back. I am putting Burress in that category. His adult life was spent living lavishly. Why would he want to risk that again and go back to jail? I think the time did him well and rehabilitated him to the point where he will be a much better citizen both on and off the field. If he can talk with Michael Vick he should. Vick has done a wonderful job coming back to society after a stay in the pokey. Vick could be used as a role model for Burress.
I want to find the good in people so I believe Burress will make a big change to his life. Big, fast, strong and tough wide receivers are tough to find. One is coming free today. This could be the best free agent signing of the off season for one NFL team, why not let that team be the Chiefs? He would be great opposite Dwayne Bowe. He would be great to have around for both Bowe and rookie John Baldwin. He would be another option for Matt Cassel. I think it is a no brainer. However it won’t happen here in KC, so I can stop living my dream.
Burress will be a playmaker this season in the NFL, well IF we have a season in the NFL. I would just hate to see him do well for a team other than the Chiefs.
