“We are going to surprise some people” Derrick Johnson told me after practice on Tuesday. And with that quote, the message was sent to the rest of the NFL world, Don’t sleep on the Chiefs.
For most of camp the Chiefs have been very very guarded in what they think about their team, Johnson flat out sent a warning shot that he believes this edition of the Chiefs is going to be for real. After last Friday’s performance, no one is doubting the Pro Bowl linebacker. He has a feeling that the Chiefs are on the cusp of something special.
However, they need to get Brandon Flowers back. Flowers has now missed over a week with a heel injury and head coach Romeo Crennel said Tuesday morning that if you are not practicing you are not playing, so to answer the question, if there were a game today would Flowers play, the answer would have to be no. He went for more tests on Tuesday but the organization is still not overly concerned about his heel right now.
Practice on Tuesday was upbeat. It was also the Dexter McCluster show. The Chiefs seemed to make an effort to get him the ball when in their nickel offense. They got it to him early and often. He did a nice job on Tuesday. The team is also still rotating the quarterbacks. Brady Quinn ran with the 2’s on Tuesday but that does not mean he will be the second string quarterback on Saturday in St. Louis.
The Chiefs are quickly wrapping up the St. Joe portion of camp and when they return home to Arrowhead next week, it will be game week mode and not training camp mode. Chiefs will practice at 3:20 on Wednesday.
All for now....
