Chris "Getz" Some Love

Leaving Kauffman Stadium on Friday evening, you would have thought Chris Getz just committed a major crime.  In baseball terms he did.  His error late in the game allowed the Cubs to take the first game from the home town team and that did not sit well with the fans.  Chris Getz has been a guy that has been under a lot of scrutiny all season long.  For the first two months of the year, and in spring training too, fans wanted Mike Aviles to be the starting second sacker.  However, when the bloom fell off that rose, Getz was the everyday starting second sacker.  He never really won the job, he just kinda earned it by default.  Friday night, he almost never made it out of the K.

Fast forward to Sunday afternoon at about  3:30 local time.  The royals were wrapping up a series win over the Cubs and Getz had a few key hits on Saturday and Sunday.  Friday was a distant memory for many Kansas City fans.  Had Getz been a football player, he would have been killed all week by fans, media and the experts.  Since he plays baseball, he had the chance the next day to get redemption and he took advantage of the opportunity.

Getz has been a lightning rod all year and sometimes I think the anger is misplaced.  Getz has been a very solid second baseman for the royals this season.  In fact, when it comes to hitting with runners in scoring position, Dick Kaegel of MLB.com pointed out that Getz is 7th best in the league with a .367 average with runners on either second or third or both.  Getz comes through when it matters most.  In fact in his last ten games, he has fourteen hits and 7 runs scored and he has struck out just ONCE.  That is pretty impressive.  He also has one of the top fielding percentages among AL second baseman making just 3 errors so far this year.

Getz has been about as solid as they come for the royals.  Fans are always so fickle that they forget to see the big picture.  At the end of the year Getz will be one of the biggest positives the royals can take out of this season.  Before you jump to conclusions, take a look at the evidence and the evidence states that Getz is pretty good.
