Curtis Kitchen: Fighting Words

Each week, it might be me mixing it up (good), an aggravated quote from a coach or player (better) or an irritated email or angsty tweet from you (best). One way or the other, we’ll hash it out because here, in this column on 610sports.com, we definitely talk about the club. It’s FIGHTIN’ WORDS! - ck

Back to life, back to reality

“Well the last few days were fun thinking Mr. Glass wanted to win. Now back to reality of 80-90 losses.” –powercat930, Twitter

It just seems to fit the Kansas City Royals narrative, since the Damon/Dye/Beltran/Sweeney days anyways. The Kansas City Star’s Bob Dutton has beautifully painted the picture, through front office quotes and his own personal thoughts, that this organization understands it has come a long ways in building, and may not fully understand how close it may actually be in turning that work into a reward.

While the on-field product is improving (even if wins haven’t), to be so tone-deaf to your fans and potential free agents as to even publicly reference payroll limitations in the middle of chasing down that coveted starting pitcher is hard to fathom. But… sigh… I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, and it’s why no matter how much progress the Royals make, I’m never able to feel 100-percent comfortable with what’s going on out at Kauffman Stadium — like the rug is always about to be pulled out from under everyone.

Collin Klein’s light suitcase

“Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein was shut out from the awards stage at the College Football Awards presented Thursday.” – The Topeka Capital-Journal

Those who understand awards, once they reach the finalists stage, are popularity contests – just the same way you voted for your Homecoming Kings and Queens. The most important part, for any candidate and their team, is putting together the kind of season needed to make the final list in the first place. This was the worst-case scenario for Collin Klein, obviously. But, just because Klein’s suitcase isn’t getting heavier with hardware takes nothing away from the fact that he’s led his team to an 11-1 record and No. 5 ranking in the country. The Wildcats still get to enjoy the 11-course dinner, even if it was a little short on the gravy.

Always worth the awareness

“21 of the 32 NFL teams have had a player charged with domestic violence this year.” - @sportsmatrix, Twitter

No soap box here. No rehashing tired arguments or playing another tired round of the blame game. I simply believe that a statistic like this one should be shared. Do with it what you will.
