Danny Parkins: Big Mistake By Tiger
Tiger Woods is making a huge mistake firing Stevie Williams. Not that I think Williams, or any caddy for that matter, makes a big difference for their golfer. But Williams was more than a caddy to Woods. He was a good soldier.
When Tiger crashed his car, dominated the tabloids, and checked into rehab – Stevie Williams said nothing. After 18 months of losing, injuries, and rumors swirled about performance enhancing drugs – Stevie Williams said nothing. He didn’t even work with other golfers, as caddies often do, until very recently – when he got on the bag of fellow New Zealander and close friend Adam Scott for the last 3 tournaments until Tiger healed. Stevie Williams has always been loyal to Tiger Woods.
And now, Tiger’s cutting him loose. Apparently, to Stevie’s surprise.
''Needless to say this came as a shock,'' Williams said. ''Given the circumstances of the past 18 months working through Tiger's scandal, a new coach and with it a major swing change and Tiger battling through injuries, I am very disappointed to end our very successful partnership at this time.”
Here’s the rub. When Tiger and Elin split, her settlement was reportedly 9 figures so she would never do interviews and smear Woods’ name even further. But Tiger fired Stevie. There’s no contract binding Williams from not telling tales out of school on what life was like with Tiger on the road. There’s probably a 6 figure book deal in it for him if he wants it. I know I’d read it.
The last thing Tiger Woods needs is another distraction. And by firing Stevie Williams, when he clearly didn’t want to be, he might have turned him into the most disgruntled former employee in sports.
