Josh Klingler: An Apology to Dan Beebe

I'm sorry Dan Beebe.  There I said it. I'm sorry.  I did not believe you would be able to pull this TV $$ rabbit out of your hat.  Congratulations.  The Big 12 Conference just struck a football TV deal worth 300+% more WITHOUT having Nebraska football as an attractive star.  This is like Jon Cryer getting $2 mil from CBS now that Charlie Sheen is gone.  Ain't happenin.  But you did it.

Beebe said last year that there would be TV dollars out there to place the league's teams on good footing with other conferences revenue streams.  He was right, Fox Sports is stepping up with coin to fill up the bundles and baskets (RIP Lew).  The remaining ten schools that now comprise the Big 12 all now will have plenty of money to continue the arms race with.

For you the fan, this is also a good thing.  I have been pounding the table ever since I moved here in 2003 about the lack of 'complete' TV coverage of Big 12 football.  A major BCS conference that does not have all of it's games, especially league games, on TV?  It has never added up.  Luckily with this deal, all games will be on TV.  Each school will have the opportunity to have one game each year kept in-house to broadcast and profit from independently.  If they choose not to or are unable to, then one of the Fox platforms will still pick up the game.  At this point I am not quite sure if that one game could be put on PPV by the school or how exactly how it will work, but as I understand it, there will never be a game that is not televised.

We talked with John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal on the show this week and he says that live sporting events are the pure gold for TV networks right now, and that we will continue to see the bar raised on rights fees.  Someone has to pay that freight to make these contracts possible.  Just an early heads up, that means you the sports fan, through higher cable & satellite fees.  You might have to make the choice whether or not you will pay more, but at least it is going to be available.
