Josh Klingler: C'mon, keep me interested

It's quickly approaching danger time for me with the Royals and consequently Major League Baseball. Every reason season at 'X' date, it becomes the time where I don't even look at the MLB standings anymore. When the Royals slip-slide out of shouting distance from first place I begin to get numb. There's no need to see how far the misery gets. I begin to take it game by game, looking for small victories among mounting losses. I don't want to go into that zone, but I find that I have to.
It is getting very close now. I felt the Royals were granted a reprieve last week, winning in come from behind fashion against Texas saved me for the Cardinal weekend, which despite dropping 2 of 3, kept me interested. But now, I'm teetering. Seeing Joakim Soria blow a save and Luke Hochevar giving up an 8 run inning starts the mind wandering in other directions.
While I still follow the Royals, it becomes much more casual, and really sucks the life out of following any baseball at all. I have a hard time enjoying the game when I don't have a dog in the fight. (can we still use that term? #vick) I've found over the years that the lack of Royals success has not made me search for another team to follow, but rather encouraged me to find other things to follow besides baseball. Not that I'm blaming the Royals, but I'm blaming the Royals. I am not much of a baseball fan anymore. Unfortunately I'm a long way removed from the baseball card collecting/stat memorizing kid that I remember being.
When I can't tell you, without looking it up, how many games out of first pace the Royals are? Then I've hit that point .. and I'm close to that point. And it sucks.
