Chiefs camp is upon us (some of you are saying thank you to whoever you pray to). Here's what I'm looking for over next several weeks in St. Joe.
For better or worse, there are no 1st team training camp battles. The starters are largely set, meaning the real competition will be less exciting for the back up positions.
QB – I don't frankly care who wins the #2 job. May the best man win. There is no competition for Matt Cassel. If he gets hurt then hopefully the better QB will play.
RB – Jamaal Charles & Peyton Hillis are the locks. I guess we want Shane Bannon to be the fullback, but I'd almost rather see Charles & Hillis matched together. Can Cyrus Gray be the 3rd back or will they have to resort to more Dexter McCluster madness?
WR – Dwayne Bowe's arrival pending. Can Jonathan Baldwin build on The Catch of OTAs? How much will Dex be used and can any of the youngsters Devon Wylie, Junior Hemingway or someone else factor in?
TE – Tony Moeaki, health, nuff said. I like the Kevin Boss addition and would love to see some two TE's with a healthy Moeaki.
OL – Starters set. Will there be any drop off from Casey Wiegmann's departure into Rodney Hudson's full time tenure? Is there enough depth is anyone goes down?
P – Dustin Colquitt, stud. Can launch missles in his sleep.
K – Ryan Succop has another kicker in camp in Matt Szymanski, not sure if there's any competition or not, but it can't hurt.
Returners – Can they find any kind of spark? Javier Arenas, Dex, or Wylie maybe?
DL – Tyson Jackson, Glenn Dorsey are set, and Dontari Poe is expected to start, but what if he can't? Amon Gordon I guess would get the callup. Allen Bailey needs to be in the rotation too. Will there be a Jerrell Powe sighting?
LB – Again set. Justin Houston, Jovan Belcher, Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali. Good depth behind them too. Can Brandon Siler be a competitor after missing all of last year? The backup battles will be special teams battlers as well.
S – Eric Berry back hopefully ready (like Charles & Moeaki, not needed at full speed until opening day). Kendrick Lewis also had an offseason surgery to come back from so we saw a lot of backups at safety during OTAs. I like the Abram Elam signing. He may be a 3rd starter at that spot. Who the 4th safety is is anyone's guess. There's a job to be won. De'Quan Menzie is a draft pick, so he's in, but didn't do much during OTAs due to injury. Travis Daniels could be a swing guy. Donald Washington has done nothing to impress, and had his recent off the field boo boo.
CB – Brandon Flowers and Stanford Routt have no competition either. Routt still will have a lot to prove to naysayers after a penalty filled 2011 in Oakland. Backing up though? Is Jalil Brown ready to make a jump? Is Javier Arenas capable of more?
I'm also looking forward to Brian Daboll. One voice on offense seemed very organized during OTAs. He ran the O, Romeo Crennel ran the D. Pretty simple yet hopefully effective.
I'm guessing camp will be relatively light of drama but hopefully progress. Regardless, we've got football and life is good.
