Josh Klingler: Live in NOLA and they are happy for it
Final Four 2012 comes live from New Orleans where we've been broadcasting for most of the week.
The Final Four is a reward for successful basketball season, a culmination of hard work and a little luck and this year four teams that really deserve to be here. That's no shot at other previous semifinalists, but this isn't about any team that got hot at the right time but teams that have performed over the long haul. (even Louisville as a 4 seed shouldn't be considered a party crasher)
Coming to NOLA though I can't help but think about the devastation that I only witnessed on TV during Hurricane Katrina.
I cannot imagine the impact and destruction of the storm and what it did to this city. This is my first time here so I can't get a clear picture of what the city looked like before Katrina. But I also can't help but
What I can tell you is that the locals here are tremendously appreciative of visitors and the fact that college basketball has brought its signature event back for the first time since 2003 and the economic impact that comes with it.
I have encountered bus drivers, cabbies, employees at the hotel and arena who have all said “thank you for coming here.” Seeing business and tourism come back has been a slow process according to the people I've come across here who seem very geniune in their appreciation of visitors. Yes they want me to spend my money as well, but I feel like it's actually going to a cause.
It's also been pretty cool this week broadcasting from WWL Radio here in New Orleans. It's part of our corporate family at Entercom Radio. But during Hurricane Katrina it became so much more. The radio crews were the lifelines to information dealing with life and death. I spew nonsense about sports every day. Pretty humbling.
Oh yeah, I'll take KU over Ohio State and Kentucky over Louisville with Kentucky beating Kansas on Monday night. I may have forgot for a minute that there are games to be played, after press conferences, press conferences, press conferences …..
