Josh Klingler: Understanding the KU Recruiting Crazies...Sort Of
by Josh Klingler,posted May 19 2011 12:00AM
I understand, but I don't understand. Tis the end of the spring basketball recruiting period... well almost, and it's panic time across a segment of the college hoops crowd (maybe I'm pointing at you KU fan).
The annual freak out of KU fan makes me chuckle .. “will we get point guard X? If we don't we're screwed.” “I can't believe small forward Y chose Texas, Bill Self has failed” All worked up about players you've never really heard of nor watched play other than YouTube highlights seems a little extreme to me.
Granted while I think this is the largely Twitter and message board minority who are on DEFCON watch, it often reeks of panic and despair.
There are a select few websites that are really good at recruiting news that are serving the diehards clamoring for every latest thought of a 19 year old kid, but I just cannot get into it.
To me there's no reason for alarm, especially for KU fan. It's a yearly huge workup over little to nothing. I do not remember a recent season where I looked back and said “If only they had landed the #6 power forward in the country, that would have made a title team.” Your team will be fine.
Color me naïve, I trust that Bill Self can find what he needs better than @JayhawkFan4187 in recruiting and some fans get too hung up on what a team looks like on paper. As Brady McCollough of the KC Star put it in his story this week “a big day for the sub-section of the Kansas basketball fan base that spends more time thinking about players that aren’t on campus than the ones that are.”
I could roll the dice right now with Thomas Robinson, Tyshawn Taylor, Elijah Johnson, Travis Releford, & Jeff Withey. Not a bad starting five to me, and I've actually watched them play, in person on the court at KU, and not on YouTube.
