You don't hate it, so are you bought in? We broadcasted live this week from the Major League Soccer SuperDraft in Kansas City. I never thought I'd say that on our show. And you know what? You didn't complain.
We even had two SOCCER interviews on the show. Not one negative text and many positive tweets about talking Sporting KC. (And believe me, you have no problem telling us when you hate something!)
That's not to say we are going to devote a majority of time talking about soccer every day, but it continues to show how much Sporting KC has come along in the KC sports landscape.
I've always been the soccer apologist. I've played my whole life, I enjoy watching the game, but also realize we are still appealing to the masses with what we talk about on the show, and for now it's not really soccer.
But I am pleased and encouraged by how last year's perfect storm of new stadium, exciting team, and pro-active ownership group created what Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes told us was a “cult-like following.”
It's also cool that Kansas City is becoming a showcase city for US soccer. MLS just brought it's nationally televised draft, the US men's and women's matches and other international matchups and more are coming to KC. That's pretty cool.
I still think the key to this momentum continuing has to be on the field and, duh, winning! But we have a franchise in Sporting KC that really, really wants to win. They have no intention of making it a one-hit wonder. Jump on board as Livestrong Sporting Park could be the 'place to be' again in 2012.
