Chiefs training camp is upon us, right on time without any drama or action .. cough, cough. It will be an interesting next few days beginning Thursday night on reporting day in St. Joseph and into the weekend's workouts at Missouri Western.
In most years reporting day was an easy way to do a head count, usually a player or two are holdouts and a few don't pass the conditioning test in order to take part in drills. This year, thanks to the lockout, not all free agents are in the fold, there's been just a few days to even negotiate with the draftees, and with no offseason workouts, who knows what shape some guys will report in?
Adam Teicher of the Star and I dubbed it “The Gulag” a few years ago, it's the banished area of training camp for those rehabbing injuries, working on conditioning, or who are outright fat. It's been a place that you don't want to be in Camp Haley. I've got to imagine there may be a few more suspects than usual doing the 'stationary bike of shame' after an offseason spent on their own.
Coach Haley acknowledged this week that football shape is different than working out on your own or with small groups, but I can't imagine this will allow him to cut the players any slack, nor should it. It's GO time and the first preseason game is here August 12th.
It's going to be fun, seeing who is here, who isn't and what do they look like? Follow 610 Sports personalities on Twitter as we'll keep you up to date on all of the Chiefs happenings, follow me @joshklingler & our group covering things in St. Joe @bobfescoe @dannyparkins @getnickwright.
