Royals Swept by Angels

-The Royals (21-26) fell in the finale to the Angels, 5-2. The team was swept in the 4-game series, and has now lost five straight, 9 of 10, and 16 of 20.

-Wade Davis made the start, and put together on of his best starts as a member of the Royals. His final lined showed 6.1 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 6 K, 2 BB on 102 pitches.

-Davis was given a lead in the 2nd inning. Billy Butler (1-for-2) and Eric Hosmer (2-for-5) hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Lorenzo Cain (0-for-4) hit a grounder to the third baseman, and he tagged third and got the force out at second base. With two outs, and Cain on first, David Lough (1-for-4) hit an RBI triple to right-center field, giving Kansas City the lead.

-Davis cruised through the first six innings. He didn't allow more than one hit in any inning, and never faced any serious trouble.

-The Royals tacked on a second run in the 5th inning. George Kottaras (0-for-2) reached on a one-out walk. He stole second on an apparent hit-and-run attempt with Chris Getz (1-for-4) at the plate. Getz missed a pitch in the dirt, but Kottaras reached second safely. Getz popped out to the shortstop for the second inning.

-Alcides Escobar (3-for-5) reached on an infield single, and moved Kottaras to third. Kottaras would score on an errant pick-off attempt by Angels starter Jerome Williams. Alex Gordon (1-for-4) reached on a single, but Billy Butler struck out on a tough 1-2 pitch. Butler wasn't pleased with the call, and ended up getting ejected by home plate umpire Marty Foster. In my opinion, it was the correct call.

-Foster was the same umpire that missed a call on Friday night on a Mike Trout stolen base, and the same umpire who threw out Chris Getz in Saturday's game.

-The Royals 2-0 lead lasted until the 7th inning. Davis served up a lead-off home run to Josh Hamilton. He would then walk Howie Kendrick, get Albert Callaspo to pop out in foul territory, and then give up another walk. Ned Yost called upon Bruce Chen out of the bullpen.

-Chen threw only two pitches. They both went down as RBI singles. One to J.B. Shuck, and the second to Erick Aybar. Ned Yost said he would call them bad pitches, citing the fact that they were both "jam shots." In my opinion, Chen left both pitches up. The Royals trailed 3-2.

-The Royals had plenty of opportunities over the final three innings. In the 7th, Getz hit a one-out single, and after he stole second, Gordon was intentionally walked. It brought up Butler's spot in the line-up, and Yost called upon Jeff Francoeur (0-for-2). He worked the count to 2-2, but hit a jam-shot blooper to second base to end the inning.

-In the 8th, Lough reached on an error by Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo. It was another missed call by this umpiring crew. The first base umpire said that Trumbo didn't touch first after collecting Lough's grounder. He was wrong. Nonetheless, Elliot Johnson (1-for-4) followed with a single of his own. Yost pinch-hit Adam Moore (0-for-1) for Kottaras. Moore, who was recalled from Omaha on Saturday following the death of Salvador Perez's grandmother, grounded out to third base.

-The Angels tacked on two more in the 8th. Luke Hochevar came back out in the 8th after retiring the final two batters in the 7th. He walked the first batter, but got Josh Hamilton to fly out to center field. Hochevar hit Kendrick, putting runners on first and second, ending his day. Aaron Crow then came out of the pen, and after setting down the first batter, allowed back-to-back RBI singles.

-In the 9th, Getz led off by drawing a walk, and Escobar followed by legging out an infield single. Gordon was sat down on strikes for the first out. Francoeur came up again, and saw 11 pitches, but ultimately flew out to center field. Hosmer grounded out to the shortstop ending the game.
