Are The Chiefs Really Going To Draft A Quarterback In The First Round?
Will They Finally Do It?
Will April 27th when the NFL draft kicks off in Philadelphia be the day the Chiefs take a quarterback in the first round? I talked about it last week and how I am favoring Patrick Mahomes and that is only due to Deshaun Watson probably going way earlier in the draft. Although some mocks have Watson landing with the Chiefs like former NFL GM and current NFL Network analyst Charley Casserly in his latest mock who had Deshaun landing with the Chiefs.
With Nick Foles getting 11 million for 2 years in Philadelphia (which was affordable even to the cash strapped Chiefs) the writing is on the wall to have Alex Smith play this year and develop hopefully a rookie quarterback as your #2 or #3 depending on the battle at camp with Tyler Bray.
Chiefs GM John Dorsey has said that he does not think a rookie quarterback from this class is ready to start this season. These statements don't concern me because he has Andy Reid the quarterback whisperer as his head coach and he could take a year to play and learn behind Alex Smith. The thing Alex does have going for him is he is a true pro and someone who studies the game. I do not think the Chiefs can get past the divisional round with Alex as quarterback but I do think he would handle this situation like a true pro and help a young QB on what it takes to be a professional.
Here is the lates looks on NFL.com as far as their mock drafts: NFL.com mocks:
Ball velocity numbers (MPH) from the Combine:— Dane Brugler (@dpbrugler) March 10, 2017
60 - Mahomes
59 - Webb
56 - Kizer
55 - Trubisky, Evans
53 - Peterman, Kaaya
49 - Watson
Does a QB velocity matter? Here is Pro Football weekly's look at if this matters: QB Velocity does it matter
For combine velocity measurement for QBs remember this.— Benjamin Allbright (@AllbrightNFL) March 10, 2017
Over 55 mph doesnt guarantee success, but under it pretty much guarantees failure
2 mph ball velocity might not seem like a big deal, but it translates to 3 ft travelled on 20 yd throw in same time frame. Huge NFL window— Benjamin Allbright (@AllbrightNFL) March 10, 2017
Also of note our friend Terez Paylor who is a 610 Sports Radio contributor and the Chiefs beat writer for the Kansas City Star has the Chiefs drafting Patrick Mahomes. I was excited to read this because at this point I would do the same thing. Click here for the: Terez Paylor mock

Lets look at the top 7 QB's that the Chiefs could take either in first or the 2nd and 3rd round as well:
Deshaun Watson--He is my top QB which I think will be long gone before the Chiefs select but some mock's have him sliding to the Chiefs if you buy into the QB velocity theory. He has accounted for 825 passing yards with 7 touchdowns and 116 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground in the last 2 National Championship games against Alabama and that defense.
Mitch Trubisky-only 1 year of a track record but people love him. I have seen him range from top 10 all the way to the 32nd pick in this years draft.
Chiefs will work out QB Mitch Trubisky after North Carolina pro day https://t.co/3d1cU0WZHZ— Arrowhead Pride (@ArrowheadPride) March 21, 2017
Patrick Mahomes-Led the nation with 5052 passing yards this year and finished 4th in yardage in 2014. The biggest concern is that he might be a system QB, so many go to Tech and put up huge numbers but doesn't translate to the NFL like his head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
Deshone Kizer-Some have Deshone as a first round pick but no later than a 2nd
Davis Webb-big quarterback who looks the part at 6'5". Has a powerful arm and had the 2nd highest velocity at the combine. He played at Tech but was a senior transfer to Cal.
Nathan Peterman-could probably go anywhere between the late 2nd to the 4th round. He was a transfer from Tennessee but had 2 productive years at Pitt.
Brad Kaaya-3 year starter at Miami but could be a decision for teams in late 2nd to 4th round. Probably a tough choice between him and Nathan Peterman
The Chiefs should end up with one of these guys. I personally like Watson and Mahomes. Let's hope this is finally the year the Chiefs take a QB early instead of wasting picks in the 5th round on guys like Aaron Murray and Kevin Hogan.
