A Look At The Wide Receivers In The Draft

Adding Skill To The Wide Receiver Position For The Chiefs

Will the Chiefs look at the wide receiver position in the draft?  It's not out of the realm of possibilities if they don't go quarterback.  However I would still go QB, ILB, RB, WR in that order.  There is a need however to address the position as the Chiefs aren't getting production out of that position.  Jeremy Maclin had a down season for the Chiefs which did include injuries but only 44 catches 536 yards and 2 touchdowns of productivity.  We have been waiting for the emergence of Chris Conley which was taken in the 3rd round of the 2015 draft.  Conley showed some flashes but that trust isn't still there with Alex Smith but his production was on par with Jeremy Maclin as he had 44 catches for 530 yards.

Albert Wilson chipped in for 31 catches for 279 yards but Travis Kelce led the team in catches with 85 catches 1125 yards and 4 touchdowns from the tight end position.  The big surprise was the emergence of Tyreek Hill not only as a pass catcher but also a runner.  Tyreek had 61 catches for 593 yards and 6 touchdowns and according to some of the things Andy Reid has been saying look for his role to increase.

That brings us to the 2017 draft and this team needs another weapon.  More weapons on offense frees up guys like Travis Kelce to roam.  Tyreek has brought some much needed explosion but can you imagine another playmaker on this offense?  Alex Smith is still the QB and that could limit some of the skill positions but with the addition of a new running back which I think they will do at some point and getting a much needed big play WR in the draft.

Mock drafts have the receivers all over the place but Will Brinson of CBS recently had the Chiefs taking Corey Davis the wide receiver from Western Michigan in the first round.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com had the Chiefs taking Corey Davis WR Western Michigan

Here is a look at the top receivers:

John Ross-set the record at the combine with a 4.22 40 yard dash.

Corey Davis-Didn't run the 40 a the combine--Mike Mayock has him as his top ranked WR

Mike Williams-Mayocks 2nd ranked WR--probably gone within the first 15 picks

Zay Jones-fast climber could be taken in the 2nd or 3rd round.  Ran a 4.45 at the combine

Curtis Samuel-very interesting prospect as he can play both WR and RB but with a blazing 4.31 40 yard dash at the combine 2nd to John Ross--imagine this type of skill set with Tyreek Hill

Will keep you updated on all the positions.  Check out the running backs, quarterbacks and inside linebacker stories I have done so far. And as always listen to The Day Shift 10-2 daily as we talk NFL draft.
