What I Will Be Watching Friday Night

What to watch in the Chiefs game Friday night against the 49ers at 8pm.  Andy Reid has said that all the players will play in week 1 of preseason but won’t guarantee playing time after today.  The NFL changed the rules this year that you don’t have to cut rosters from 90 to 75 during camp and then down to 53.  Now this year there is just one cut down date as NFL teams have to be to 53 by 3pm central on September 3rd.

Here is what I will be watching the most in preseason game #1:

Wide Receivers-Tyreek Hill is the #1 WR and I am expecting him to breakout and get to 1,000 yards this year but we already know what he can do as he has been amazing in camp this year.  But who is going to shine as the #2.  Chris Conley is the #2 WR for the Chiefs on the depth chart and by experience he is expected to be the guy.  He and Albert Wilson at 24 years old are the oldest receivers the Chiefs have .  I will be instead watching some of the guys that have high hopes to make the team.  I will be watching the 4th round picks-Demarcus Robinson from last year who Reid has praised through the off season and this year’s 4th round pick Jehu Chesson.  Will also be paying close attention to the undrafted guys in Seantavius Jones and Marcus Kemp.  Reid has praised Jones through camp and Kemp seems to have a nice rapport with Patrick Mahomes.  Of course there is always Albert Wilson and how much will DAT step up in the offense.

Practice squad watch for Chiefs at the WR position:

Marcus Kemp-undrafted out of Hawaii has turned a few heads and could end up on the practice squad with Gehrig Dieter from Alabama.  Kemp had 1100 yards on 73 catches last year at Hawaii.

Another to watch for the practice squad is Gehrig Dieter who was undrafted out of Alabama but he had a monster season at Bowling Green before transfering where he caught 94 passes for 1033 yards and 10 touchdowns.  He is another one to watch because of the rapport he has built with Mahomes.

Inside Linebackers-The Chiefs finished 26th against the run last year and have made a few moves to bolster the run defense in trading DJ Alexander to the Seahawks for Kevin Pierre-Louis who has looked good so far. Derrick Johnson and Ramik Wilson will be the starters and Josh Mauga is back but really want to see 5th round pick Ukeme Eligwe and what he can do.  Stopping the running game is a must or they will be stopped at the divisional round again. But Kevin Pierre-Louis that the Chiefs got from the Seahawks might really help this position.

Quarterbacks-The way Reid has set it up will be Alex Smith with the start in the first quarter followed by Tyler Bray in the 2nd quarter and then the moment we have all been waiting for will be Patrick Mahomes in the 3rd quarter.  Patrick has looked good at camp.  He will not replace Alex Smith as the starter but is in a competition with Tyler Bray for the 2nd string QB.  Joel Stave will play the 4th quarter.

Running backs-Seems the Chiefs have really tried to emphasize the running game in St. Joe and rookie Kareem Hunt has been impressive but Spencer Ware is currently the starter.  I feel they will split time with Ware getting the majority of the carries early on but as the season progresses expect a lot more from Hunt who has looked great in the passing game and really changed as a receiver out of the backfield between his junior and senior year when he went up 30 receptions.

But the guy to watch is CJ Spiller the journeyman has been pushing Charcandrick West for the 3rd string running back.  But the only way for him to make the team was for him to play special teams.  He has returned kickoffs in the past and Tyreek will be only returning punts, he also was on the punt coverage this camp as well.

The depth chart is out:
