This morning, I completely lost my mind with happiness when news broke that the Chiefs signed WR Sammy Watkins. If you missed it, listen here: Welch Freaks Out When He Learns About the Watkins Signing

I wanted Watkins more than any free agent in the NFL. Despite the holes on the Chiefs defense, I thought it was so important to give Patrick Mahomes another big-time weapon so the offense could carry the team. Now, it looks like the Chiefs offense is set to go off in a massive way.

When evaluating Sammy Watkins, you can’t look at numbers alone. During the 2nd half of the 2017 season, we started to see the Sammy Watkins we were expecting to see when he was drafted 4th overall out of Clemson in 2014.

But, if you are looking for numbers to grab onto, how about this one: Sammy Watkins has scored 25 TDs in 52 games. His nose for the end zone is undeniable.

Considering the Chiefs struggled horribly to score in the red zone in 2017 (giving Harrison Butker the record for most made FGs in one season in Chiefs history), a target who knows how to finish is exactly what the Chiefs need.

A ton of teams were in on Sammy Watkins, and the $30M guaranteed at signing was probably the biggest reason the Chiefs were able to get him. Around the NFL, teams are jealous.

On top of that, Sammy’s new teammate Tyreek Hill is ready for them to take over the NFL.

Celebrate the signing of Sammy Watkins, Chiefs fans. Even if you’re hesitant on Watkins as a player, at the very least, the Chiefs just sent a message that they’re going to do everything they can to put Patrick Mahomes in position to be successful.
