Bob Fescoe- What A Difference A Month Makes
After the first two games of the season, the Chiefs were headed nowhere.  The talk around the team was about firing Todd Haley and trying to get a high draft pick to grab Andrew Luck.

But something happened in San Diego.  The Chiefs did not come away with a win, but they played a good game.  The next 3 weeks, the Chiefs were able to take what they accomplished in San Diego and parlayed it into 3 straight wins.

Now, that same Chargers team invades Arrowhead Stadium on Halloween Night for a first place showdown.

The locker room on Monday was as upbeat as I have ever seen.  Players were blasting music, playing cornhole and enjoying themselves after a 28-0 win over the Raiders that proved that they are a team.

The offense was spotty on Sunday in Oakland.   But that was ok.  The defense came up big for KC.  6 interceptions and 2 returned for touchdowns made it an afternoon to remember.  That’s what its all about...53 guys playing as 1.  We finally saw that on Sunday.

So much scrutiny has been given to Matt Cassel.  Its easy to criticize the quarterback.  However, Sunday should have taught us that it takes more than a top notch QB to win a game.  It takes an entire team.

Over the last 2 years, the Chiefs have had some great wins.  Sunday was one of my favorites.  It showed me that KC is not one dimensional.  It also showed me that the rest of the team would find a way to step it up when one area of the game was not clicking.

Going into November the Chiefs have a chance to be in first place.  After the first two weeks of the season, we never would have expected that out of this team.

Sit back, enjoy the ride.  The final 10 games are going to be wild!

Bob Fescoe- An Open Letter to Chiefs Fans
Dear Chiefs Fans,

Do you consider yourself a true fan of the Kansas City Chiefs?  If the answer to that is “Yes” then you need to ask yourself if you on the “Suck for Luck” bandwagon.  If the answer to that is “Yes”, then you are not a true fan.

True fans NEVER root for their team to lose games.  True fans NEVER tank an entire season to maybe get the #1 overall draft pick.

Over the past two weeks, I have been very happy to see the performance of Matt Cassel rival most of the performances by QB’s in the NFL.  Cassel has taken this team on his shoulders.  Oh, this is not the first time that he's shown leadership (see the St. Louis game last year when he was playing 11 days after having his appendix removed).  What we have seen over the past few weeks is that this is still Matt Cassel’s team.  Regardless of who is calling the plays or who is out on the field, Cassel has shown leadership.  He put head coach Todd Haley in his place in the Minnesota game and he led a 2 minute drill at the end of the first half to get the Chiefs back into the Colts game.  He then erased a 17 point deficit and did what even his biggest supporters said he could not do, and that was lead a comeback.

Matt Cassel has shown a lot over the past two weeks.  He has shown that he can be a leader, a true professional and a guy that can carry a team.  Matt Cassel is the QB for the Chiefs.  I would like to see Andrew Luck or any rookie for that matter, lead like Cassel has the last 14 days.
So, say what you want about Matt Cassel, but remember, this guy has heart, guts and makes plays.

Cassel will never be a great QB in the NFL.  Not many of the current 32 are great QB’s.  However he is a good QB and a QB the Chiefs can win with now and in the future.

Bob Fescoe- What We Learned From The Weekend
A lot can be learned from the weekend that was on the football field.  Both the college and pro levels taught us a ton over the past few days.

Let’s start where the weekend began, and that is Lawrence Kansas.  A beautiful day in Lawrence with my wife was spoiled by KU blowing a 20-0 lead over Texas Tech.  KU got it going early, jumped out to a big lead, but they did what they do best and that is not show up on defense.  When it was all said and done, KU was outscored by 31 points in the final 3 quarters of the game.  KU’s offense is good enough to compete in the Big 12 but their defense is downright rotten.  Injuries can be blamed for a bit, a new scheme can also be blamed and we can also point to Vic Shealey as a new coordinator.  However, the real blame goes to the talent.  KU is just not good enough yet talent wise on defense to compete.  While KU recruited awesome on offense, they let the defense slide.  They are still a few recruiting classes away from winning, but who knows what the landscape of college sports will look like when that happens.

Over in Manhattan, we saw Bill Snyder cement himself as the best coach in college football history.  He has his team back in the top 20 for the first time in forever.  Bill Snyder has proven that he is the ONLY coach that can win at Kansas State.  Kansas State was irrelevant before he arrived, they were irrelevant when Prince was the coach and now they are relevant again and looking like a Big 12 power.  You can say Bryant, Paterno, Bowden and Saban, but NO ONE can win like Snyder.  Anyone can win at Alabama, Penn State, Florida and the like.  NO ONE else has ever won in Manhattan.  Bill Snyder is the best there ever was and when he retires, they better hire a Snyder coach to take over that program.

Later in the day we learned that the new leagues may not be the best moves for our friends from Nebraska and Texas A and M.  Nebraska was white washed by Wisconsin and Texas A and M was beaten by Arkansas.  Newer isn’t always better.  Good luck with your new leagues and I hope Missourah learned something from watching those two games over the weekend.

On Sunday, the Chiefs won!  It wasn’t a pretty game, but in the NFL a win is a win is a win.  Matt Cassel posted his second consecutive game with a rating over 100 and Dwayne Bowe and Steve Breaston came to play.  Both came up with huge catches against Minnesota.
Cassel and Haley had heated words on the sidelines in the first half, but Cassel’s half time speech is credited for getting the team focused to beat the Vikings in the second half of the game.  As much as the “Suck for Luck” people don’t want to hear it, Cassel is a leader and played his best game of the year.  The “Suck for Luck” train was de-railed.  Good.

So we can say that this weekend a 20-0 lead is not safe in Lawrence, Bill Snyder is a genius and the Chiefs are not out of this thing...yet.
