Surprised but not shocked. That is how I would describe the disaster that took place at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the exception of the pregame show, the rest of the show was a down right embarrassment. The Chiefs were beat 41-7. The worst part, they were never, ever in the game. Dexter McCluster fumbled the opening kick off and it went down hill after that. Penalties, turnovers, lack of execution led to the worst opening day loss and the second worst loss overall by the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
A lot of blame should be put on the feet of Todd Haley. He did not have his guys ready to go. They looked terrible in the preseason and looked even worse on Sunday. The Buffalo Bills hit the Chiefs in the mouth and never let up. In the end, all the hype that was spent “getting ready for September 11th” was lost, as the Chiefs were not ready to play a college team.
Now this organization has to move forward. They can’t spend too much time looking at this loss and sulking. They have to find a way to correct a bunch of mistakes and get more out of key players.
Buffalo did a nice job taking Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe out of the game. That is the blue print to beating KC. KC now has to come up with a blue print on how to react if those two key players are shut down. Is it more Dexter McCluster? Does Steve Breaston step it up? Can Jeremy Urban get involved? Someone has to step up on offense or it is going to be a long year for the Chiefs.
Normally, I would like to look at positives from the game, but there aren’t any. I can’t sit here looking out on an empty stadium and say, 'well at least they did such and such well', because they did not.
Hopefully the embarrassment of the low lights shown on ESPN are enough to motivate this team to play better. If it’s not, it could be a long season for the Chiefs.
One more thing, the last 3 meaningful games played at Arrowhead (Oakland, Baltimore and Buffalo) the Chiefs have been outscored 102-24. Not exactly home cooking!
